"Three Fame Fire Fighters Honored for Bravery"

On June 9, 2009 the West Chester Fire Department was dispatched to the West Branch of the Brandywine Creek, which was swollen due to recent heavy rains, in an effort to rescue two kayakers who were seen in danger near a low-head dam.

Captain Kevin Corcoran organized his rescue crews and had safety measures in place within a few minutes.  The Fame Fire Company’s Rescue Boat was then deployed with Captain Kevin Corcoran, Lieutenant Drew Ring, and Firefighter Jim Leon on board.

The attempted rescue of the first kayaker took place only twenty minutes after the arrival of emergency personnel.   The forty-four members of the West Chester Fire Department worked together for nine hours in the attempt to recover the second kayaker from the swollen waters of the Brandywine; and

This crew displayed determination, exceptional courage, and quickness of action without regard for their personal safety. We honor this team for their bravery beyond the call of duty.  

I, Carolyn T. Comitta, Mayor of the Borough of West Chester do hereby recognize and honor Captain Kevin M. Corcoran, Lieutenant Drew Ring and Fire Fighter Jim Leon for their professionalism and exemplary efforts on June 9, 2009.  I thank each of you for your commendable efforts and dedication to protecting and serving the citizens and neighbors of the Borough of West Chester.
